One of Mine

This is a film I worked on (didn't direct). Since it's on the web, I thought I'd link to it in case anyone was interested. Enjoy.

Me and You and Everyone We Know-DVD

Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005), Dir. Miranda July

A friend described this film as "quirky". She was right. As the directorial debut of performance artist Miranda July, that is really the best adjective I can think of to describe this film. That's not to say I didn't like it. I did. Mostly. In it, July explores the basic human instinct to connect with other people, even if it is in unexpected and unorthodox ways. It also explores the sides of people we rarely get to see.

Every character in this film has a strange quirk. Similarly, the characters seem to repeat one another's concerns about life without knowing it ("If you didn't know me, would you think I was really this tall?..."), which gives the film a nice sense of symmetry without being too obvious or pedantic.

Where the film falls short is in its lack of development. All we see are a myriad of quirky people who only seem to have quirky sides. They seem to have an inability to act "normal", which is kind of unnerving after a while.

Where the film really shines is in it's subtlety of character. There are nuances to each character that are only hinted at, whether it is their naivete, their need to be desired, their fear of confrontation, or their fear of desertion. Along those lines, when they say things, they say them innocently, but humorously as well. There were points in the film where I actually laughed out loud, which is rare for me.

So yes, I would recommend this film, but only for a quiet evening of light reflection. If that makes any sense.
